Abstract about the lecture:

    Since the 20th century, Confucianism has been seriously challenged by the view that it has only private morality and no public morality. Moreover, this has often been attributed to Confucianism's emphasis on family ethics. This article responds in the light of the Confucian doctrine that 'man is born of Tian '. First, Confucianism understands human existence on two levels. On the one hand, man is a child of his parents. On the other hand, man is considered to be 'born of Tian'. This suggests that two important moral aspects of man, namely filial piety and benevolence, are based on different bonds of human existence. As such, these two virtues have different occasions of application and require different moral capacities. On this basis, Confucianism proposes a way of cultivating the virtues that filial piety is the foundation of benevolence. Based on these premises, Confucianism conceives of an ideal order. Confucianism holds that gentlemen involved in politics must fulfil benevolence, righteousness, loyalty and trust, while for the people they need only fulfil filial piety in the family. This reflects the way in which Confucianism distinguishes between the public and private spheres.
